You can even donate larger items or vehicles like RVs, cars, and boats, which can easily be donated to charity organizations like Boat Angel by checking them out online. Just select the charity you would like to help out and fill out a few tax forms and you will be able to help people out while making a sizable deduction during tax season. You can even free up some space on your front lawn if you decide to donate that boat before having your yard sale.

+1 for starting early. If you plan to start at 8am you will be hounded for over an hour by people hoping to get “the best deal”, and they will have you on your heels while you’re trying to set up shop. Better to bite the bullet and get started at 6!

You’re right FI, 6am would be a good start!
I think having tables is definitely important. I also would say that instead of the newspaper you should put up a garage sale ad on Craigslist. It’s free and I think more people look at Craigslist these days than the local newspaper ads.

Definitely having a table is very important too, where you can display all your items.
I am planning to do yard sales in order to collect funds and donate it for charity works. I like the ideas of sharing and helping unfortunate people or victims of natural calamities.

That’s good to hear, I’m sure you will have a successful yard sales!
I’ve actually read where people suggest not pricing most of the items. The reason being is that it forces people to come up to you and ask what the price is and have more interaction that way. That said, we’ve not done a yard sale before, so take it with a grain of salt. 😉

You have a good point in there John, in that way you can tell that the customer is really interested on that item.
I’m trying to organize a yard sale this month and I’m hoping to find a co-host because I don’t have a TON of stuff to make the yard sale look appealing. I’m surprised at how difficult that aspect has been. I like the idea of a freebie bucket!

Good luck to your yard sale Tonya!
I’ve always wanted to host a garage sale. It sounds fun, especially now that its summer coz i can make lemonades. I got tons of stuff since i’m a hoarder and garage sale would be an excellent way to sell them for money. The cash would help pay for my retirement options. Nah, it would be too little for that. Plus, i cant let go of my stuff. Its in my nature hehe

You should try to have a yard sale, I’m sure you would enjoy it!
I would add to sell things that people would be interested in. I know it’s hard to know what others would want. But I’ve gone to yard sales that had absolute junk for sale. On the flipside, growing up we would have a yard sale every year and we had so much “good” stuff that we had people from previous years coming and telling us that they never miss our yard sale!

Doing a research for your future yard sale would lead you to have a successful one. What mostly do you sell Jon?
I’ve been thinking about having a garage sale lately, since we have a lot of little things that have value but we want to get rid of. The only thing is, I find that I can get a better price for most things on Craiglist or another online listing site. Great tips nonetheless.

Great tips. We are about to have a yard sale next week, so these tips are going to come in handy!

Having had a few garage sales over the years, you’ve got some good tips here and in the comments. I especially like the extension cord tip. Having a kid’s lemonade and/coffee stand doesn’t hurt especially if you offer the coffee for free. It draws people in and makes them feel obligated to buy something and once they buy one thing they’re more likely to buy more.

It’s definitely getting to be time for me to have a yard sale. Thanks for the great tips! I’m sure having an electric plug accessible could help too. Never thought of that!

I would also say it’s important to have everything laid out attractively on tables. I hate trying to dig through boxes of stuff.
We’re going to have a garage sale in just a few weeks because we’re preparing to move out of state. Hope to sell lots and lots.
Melissa recently posted…TOS Crew Review: ARTistic Pursuits
I totally agree with you Melissa, having a table and displaying your items would attract your costumer and to choose easily from your products.
I don’t think we have accumulated enough stuff to host a garage sale. We also haven’t lived in the area that long either. If anything, I should be checking out the garage sales around the neighbourhood.
Awesome tips! However, I wouldn’t want my personal home number on the sign if I was hosting. A lot of people would drive by and see it. You may end up getting a lot of unwanted phone calls..I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone put their phone number on a garage sale sign.
MakintheBacon recently posted…Personal Finance Advice and Exchanging Money When Travelling Overseas
Some people include their phone numbers and some don’t, you can omit on putting your personal home number on the sign. Thanks for dropping by!
I actually think having a yard sale is too much work compared to how much money you will earn. I say it is easiest and most efficient to sell the big stuff on Craigslist, where you can probably make more money and give the rest of the stuff away to charity. If you itemize your taxes you can probably earn more than you would have working all day saturday at your garage sale.
