I really like your point about lining up tasks in advance! I see that not-happen all the time here at work. Our summer student batch just started on Monday and I am very curious to see if they were organized enough this year to get them started on things right away, instead of three weeks from now, so they end up trying to cram everything into their last month on the job!

I have plans to open a business in the next year or two and – like you say – cash flow can be a real concern. While I’m seriously considering the franchise route – to reduce my risk – there’s also a very real chance that my new business may take several months before the income is anything to write home about. I’m not expecting to open the business one day and be in the black the second.
That’s one reason why I’m working on (a) reducing my expenses and (b) building inline income streams so that when the time comes, my online ventures will cover my living expenses, thus taking much of the pressure off new new business and allowing me to enjoy the process of starting a new venture rather than worrying about money.

If I ever become a full-time freelancer I will definitely be looking to add employees down the road and make myself a true “small business.” When you are a freelancer you can only do so much because you are unable to leverage the time and energy of employees and contractors.

I think another thing that really helps to fail-proof your business is to network and get yourself out there (online and in person). You’re right – lack of training can be a money suck and can really be detrimental to a business, as well.

I think these are some great thoughts to consider upfront when taking the leap from solo freelancing to small business! I’m hoping to find myself in that position someday, but I’m not there yet!

I think the other thing to think long and hard about is whether you want to be an employer. Maybe you can get by with hiring freelancers for tasks–and avoid the hassle of being an employer, especially if business ebbs and flows a lot.

Those are some really great points to think about. I’m pretty sure that if I ever went the full time freelancing route, I’d prefer to keep my business to just me – mostly because of the hassle of trying to deal with others. Not super interested in that.
