Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to run their business from home, but those that do know that it’s still a challenge. There are many benefits – reduced operating costs and no commute for instance, but there are a good few issues that you’ll need to iron out in order to make it work. Here’s our advice on the major things that you will have to spend some time thinking about.
The Working Environment
Creating a working environment that’s entirely separate from your living space is incredibly important. If these cross over too much, you’ll both hamper your business activities, and reduce the quality of your leisure time. For this reason, it’s a very good idea to dedicate however much space you need purely to your business.
Whether this is just an office, or a full extension, you should treat entering this space as going to work. Keep it tidy and in good order just as you would with a desk at work. If you’ve got family living with you at the same time, then make sure that they know you’re not to be disturbed unnecessarily.
Following on from this, having a structured working pattern really helps with efficiency and productivity, but it’s not always something that comes naturally when working at home. For this reason, take some time planning out what each and every working day should look like. Different types of business will lend themselves to varying degrees of structure, but you should always at least figure out working hours.
Link up with outside services
Even if you’re at home, some business services are likely to require some outside input, so you should factor this in too. If you’re delivering products to customers, you’ll need to work out an arrangement with a courier. It’s potentially cheaper for you to make a run to their premises each day, but lots will also collect from you. Parcel2Go is a good place to look if you want to compare options.
Other services that you might need include conferencing space. It’s hardly professional to meet with clients and partners at your own home, so you might need to rent rooms for a day or two.
Running a business from home can be really very rewarding indeed, but only if you get things right in the first place. You can read some more tips on working from home here.
