Today I would like to talk about a pretty unheard of way of making money: selling your car for scrap. I have a cool infographic below that explains the process in more detail, but basically, every year in the UK, a couple million vehicles reach the end of their life, and about a third of them are scrapped. It goes to a special facility, where toxic fluids are taken off, as well as the battery, windows or plastic parts like the bumper, then it gets scrapped.
I have seen several neighbours in the country who just keep a rotting car in their garden, the car can’t be driven, hasn’t been moved for years, and is just serving as a not so pleasant flower bed as the weeds and wild flowers invade it.
So why not try to make a little extra cash out of it? Companies can give you an estimate of how much you would get by selling your car for scrap. Then they will buy your old car and have it processed for you.
As you go through the infographic, you will see all the parts they are going to remove, and thus have no use for, before they can scrap the car. So if you are a bit handy, you could even remove them yourself and try to sell them on Gumtree or Ebay. I remember needing a few parts for my car a while back, and boy were they expensive. A second hand windshield, or even battery if you bought yours only a year or two ago, can have a resell value, especially if parts are hard to get for your specific make and model. Think about tires as well, and any improvement you may have made to the car, like a sound system or a better bumper. Just make sure it is easy for a potential buyer to find your ad, and put plenty of good quality pictures and a well written description. Looking up the part number would be useful to add it to the ad, so people find it even faster. Between that and the scrap money, you may even be looking at a better operation than fixing up your car if it is severely damaged.

Cool to get money from your old car. It’s just so sad to see them go!

We’ve scrapped two cars since we last moved: selling the individual parts would produce a lot more money, but then you end up with your driveway looking like a scrap-yard. You don’t get much money from a scrap-yard of course, but it’s better than nothing and if nothing else, it will help pay for the insurance on your next car.

A better way of making money it is. I guess I’d have to wait for more five years or more before I scrap my car.

My car is still in excellent condition, so no worries for ‘her’. It’s indeed a cool way to earn some extra bucks. I think I’d actually go the extra-mile and sell some parts myself (those that are worth more) and only then ‘scrap’ the entire car. We’ll see .. we’re still years away.

This is a better way of getting some money for an old car. It helps much more than seeing old scrap sitting in the yard while it can be converted to some money.

I never understood why until I’ve seen you infograph. It’s actually wise to get rid of my old car for a price. I must have sold first the parts in good condition before sending everything for scrap.
You know that really is a great tip actually!

Thanks for sharing this advice! I would love to get some cash, and I do happen to have an old car that might be valuable. The car doesn’t work, but it seems like that isn’t a problem for most places. Plus, the fact that every part of the car is used up is really nice! You’re recycling it completely!
I had to sell my old car piece by piece after a hard accident from which I couldn`t recover it like it once was. I barely got out alive, so you can guess how the car looked. Of course, there were some parts that I couldn`t sold, but at least I got as most money for it as I could.
This is an excellent infographic about what happens to a car after you scrap it. I have an old Buick that has been sitting in my driveway for years. It doesn’t run and isn’t worth keeping around. I had no idea that so many parts can be salvaged from a car that doesn’t work. I’ll definitely use your tip and scrap my car to get some quick cash.
I know a few family members that could really use this type of service. It’s interesting that you can actually make money off of scrapping cars. My uncle works on them quite a bit, so I’m sure he has a ton of parts and things just sitting around that he would be able to scrap. Thanks for the information! I’ll have to let him know that this is an option. Also, nice infographic!
2 of every 32 reach the end of their life? Cars sound like they get made at an increasing rate each year. Do any of the old car parts get recycled into the new, or is it all new?
When looking for a junk car, what are the parts that people would take out? I’m thinking of going to a salvage yard near my home and see if there are any junk cars that have hub cabs that are still in good care. Also, I’ll be asking the person of the yard if they’ll let me take the hubcaps.
We sold our little old car for scrap! We wouldn’t have gotten much else out of it, if we had sold it anywhere but a scrap yard. That car was so old.
Personally, I’ve never scrapped my own car, but I think it’s a great idea to get some extra cash. I hear that used auto body parts are popular. I know that when I need something for my truck, I look online for used parts. I definitely would do that if I had an old car to scrap.
It is quite difficult to find local junkyard that will pay a modest amount for your vehicle. One generally don’t get very much money for it.
I like your idea of scrapping you car and selling the parts. It is a good idea for several reasons, one of them being the ability to recycle. I like the idea of buying secondhand car parts in general, because you are repurposing old materials!
This is a great article. I read it with great interest. Buying salvage car parts can save you a great deal of money if you have the necessary mechancal skills to do the work yourself. Not only that, it has a positive effect on the environment by recyling.
Very cool. Old cars can still be converted into cash.
I think it’s more practical to sell junk cars into pieces especially for old cars . Thanks to this.!
Well I like what you said,As a junior i want some suggestion. Check my video. Thanks http://ceesty.com/wmofVm
