Can I Become A Digital Nomad?

If you regularly visit travel blogs or money and lifestyle sections, you’ll have probably come across a whole host of articles about perpetual travellers who make money on the go. The term digital nomad has become the blanket term for freelancers and remote workers who have traded the office cubicle for a beachside hammock.

It seems like the ideal lifestyle, but can you really overhaul your current way of life and become a digital nomad?

Firstly, you have to decide whether the nomad lifestyle is really for you. Sure, working away on your laptop with the sound of crashing waves as background noise sounds perfect, particularly if you’re slumped in a stuffy office while reading this, but there is more to consider.

As a nomad you’ll have to surrender comfy accommodation, proximity to friends and family and the other things we have become so accustomed to.

If you’re the sort of person who has happily spent 6 months roaming around South East Asia, you’re probably going to enjoy being a digital nomad, if you get to the end of a two-week holiday and Spain and can’t wait to get back home, maybe it’s not the life for you!

The next step is figuring out how to generate money wherever you are. Easier said than done, but far from impossible. As Lottoland’s analysis of nomadic money make ventures shows, there are three great ways of making money on the go: blogging, freelancing and starting a business.

Once you have launched and grown your blogging network, ad revenue and supplementary incomes like sponsorship can give enough income to keep you going. Some bloggers have developed large networks of lucrative websites which not only sustain them, but pay serious money!

Another way of earning remotely is by freelancing. Once you have a few clients who generate a sufficient monthly income you can be far more free with where you work from. Some digital nomads use freelancing websites to find work, or simply reach out to companies independently, it’s up to you.

The third popular option is to set up your own business. If you have a marketable skill, and won’t be relying on shifting a large quantity of physical stock then you can take your business with you to every corner of the globe!

Anyone who is genuinely interested in the digital nomad lifestyle shouldn’t despair, it’s far from an impossible dream, it just takes some determination and hard work.
