Eating well on a budget is not always easy. The government always tells us to eat well, yet the good food is always more expensive. It is not impossible to eat good on a budget, though. Here are some smart tips for how to do it.
Go to the Market
In supermarkets food is always more expensive. You are paying for the pretty packaging and the brand prices. Instead, go to a local old-fashioned market. Yes, those markets where the fruit and veggies is out on a stall. It is always cheaper than supermarket equivalents, and you can sometimes get a good deal if you buy in bulk.
Save Leftovers
Recent predictions state we as a country throw away well over half of the food we purchase and prepare. You can save a lot of money by saving perfectly good food and converting it into other meals.
The chances are you already do this during Christmas or Thanksgiving. The leftover turkey does not go in the trash. It goes into a curry, a sandwich, or a casserole. Start doing this with the rest of your food.
Use Simple Ingredients
The reality is most healthy dishes come from a few key ingredients. If you have the time, purchase these cheap ingredients and make the food yourself. Not only will you get more enjoyment out of the food making process, but also these simple ingredients will save you a bundle.
There are also many health benefits to eliminating many of these dangerous chemicals that go into store-bought foods.
Plan Your Meals
Prevent wastage by planning meals. You could make a little food diary a few days in advance. That way you only buy from the store what you actually need. It will also help you stay healthy due to the fact you will avoid any of those nasty impulse buys. There are plenty of good apps out there to help you plan and save money on groceries.
Stay in Season
You lose a lot of money on food when you start to purchase food when it is out of season. The price goes up because it all has to be imported from abroad, and those costs are passed on to you. Avoid this by only buying fruits and veggies that are in season. You can prepare for this with a little online research.
As you can see, it is easy to eat good while sticking to a shoestring budget. What other money saving tips for staying healthy have you come across?
I agree. Aside from meal planning, I stick to Paleo diet or eating healthy food like more vegetable and avoiding junk food. Doing this helps me save more money.
